Fishing
In 1952, Lac Mahon was reported to have pike, bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow perch and brown bullhead catfish. Sport fish are mainly pike and bass, also walleye.
See Sport fishing in Quebec for information on fishing licences and regulations, e.g., all anglers (residents and non-residents) must hold a valid Quebec fishing licence, and the use of live bait fish is prohibited. Quebec is divided into 29 fishing zones, each has specific open seasons, size limits, and daily catch quotas. Lac Mahon is in Zone 10.
Fish Habitat
In 1995, FAPEL assessed the fish habitat of Lac Mahon, and found that water temperature was uniform to a depth of 6 metres (ranging from 21.5 to 22.5 degrees), then colder below that (15 degrees at 8 metres) but with little or no oxygen (see Fapel 1995, attached). 81% of the lake area is less than 6 metres deep. Lac Mahon has four inlet creeks, and FAPEL stressed the importance of forestation ("air conditioning") so water from the creeks is colder than the lake water.
Habitat Protection
Wildlife habitats are protected by law. It is prohibited to engage in an activity likely to modify a biological, physical or chemical element specific to the habitat of an animal or a fish, e.g. to pour oil, gasoline or any other toxic substance in a fish habitat, lake, marsh, swamp, flood plain or watercourse. You can report any such acts to a wildlife protection officer by calling 1-800-463-2191.
