Flora & Fauna
Lac Mahon has extensive surrounding woodlands (forest), i.e. "big woods". Experts believe that minimum 50% forest cover is a low-risk approach to support most potential species and healthy aquatic systems.
Conservation authorities also assess the amount of forest "interior" (the protected core area more than 100 metres from the forest edge), which provides critical habitat for many species including songbirds. The outer 100-metre edge of a woodlot is prone to high predation, sun and wind damage, and is more susceptible to invasive species.
